Damping – the hidden factor

Two fins may look identical.
Same shape. Same profile. Even similar stiffness.

Yet on the water, they feel completely different.

The reason is not just flex.
It is  «dynamic response».

 

Damping – why behavior changes

When a fin loads and unloads, performance is not only

about how much it bends , but how it dissipates energy.

CNC Carbon Fin (100% carbon):
Low damping.
Oscillations tend to persist over time.
More sensitive, more “nervous”.

Similar to a car suspension without shock absorbers.

Molded Hybrid Fin (engineered laminate):
Higher damping due to material combination. ( see video attached)
Oscillations decay faster.
Smoother, more controlled response.

Similar to a car suspension with properly tuned shock absorbers.

 

Same stiffness does not mean same behavior.
Damping defines control.

Frequency response – the hidden factor

Every fin has a natural frequency.

If flow excitation matches it:
Resonance occurs.
Oscillations increase.
Drag rises.

 

CNC fins (100% carbon):
More sensitive to excitation.
Oscillations persist longer.

Molded fins (hybrid laminates):
More controlled dynamic behavior. Faster decay of oscillations.

 

Oscillations persist… or they are controlled.
That’s the difference.

Myth vs Reality

A flexing fin does not create thrust.

It improves efficiency by:

  • keeping flow attached

  • reducing drag

  • smoothing load transitions

 

Conclusion

You don’t just design stiffness.  You design how the fin i

nteracts with the flow.

Performance = Clean flow + Controlled flex + Tuned response

 

Windsurf boards

The same principle applies.

High-performance boards are not made from 100% carbon.

They use engineered laminates to control:

  • damping

  • flex

  • dynamic response

Pure carbon gives stiffness.
Engineered laminates give control.
